The Science of
Biodiversity Conservation

Biodiversity: the diversity and abundance of living organisms including genetic, organismal, population, species, community and ecosystem.

Biodiversity Conservation: a field of study that identifies solutions to protect and preserve biodiversity for present and future generations. Approaches focus on reactive, proactive and strategic management of changing environmental conditions by identifying the intersection of spatial and temporal patterns between threats and biodiversity.

A little bit about Climate Refugia

Climate refugia are areas where local climate changes are less pronounced due to complex interactions between topography, vegetation, and circulation currents. Studying climate refugia helps us to understand the interactions within our environment and informs our research as we work to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Climate refugia exhibit slower rates and reduced extremes of climatic change when compared to surrounding regions. This means that the local environmental conditions within climate refugia are more closely aligned with recent historic environments allowing flora and fauna time to adapt and move in response to changing environmental conditions.

A faster pace of climate change is associated with increased extinction risk, natural disasters, and loss of local community resilience. Spatial variation in climate change can be used in a variety of ways to improve outcomes for biodiversity, Indigenous communities, and natural disaster planning.
